Individuals Discontinuing Weight-Loss Medications Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that people who come off new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals using such drugs should be informed of the danger of fast weight regain when the medication ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a reversion to starting weight within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.

Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically see a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Experts believe the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Chronic Issue?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

Users who have discontinued the jabs describe a intense resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced a trigger flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described one woman.

This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Interest

Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, experts emphasize that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success relies on ongoing behavioural changes.
