Larian Studios Unveil a Fresh Divinity, Labeling it Their Most Ambitious RPG Ever

The speculation around The Game Awards was significant, especially after host Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious image of a desert monolith. The mystery has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is developing a brand-new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer that included intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the very opening of infernal gates.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian warned that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not being worked on now.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This distinction suggests that the team might be designing a real-time experience as opposed to another turn-based title. Currently, this is speculation, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is universally respected and many say it pioneered the contemporary revival of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, branching plots, and deep class systems—traits that recently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is classic fantasy, what truly sets Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust bestowed upon the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities that are viable by choosing a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.

The series is also wonderfully open-ended, enabling players to find creative solutions both in story and combat. Most missions can be solved in diverse methods, sometimes in surprising fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you heeded something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.

The Journey Continues

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, players can get ready for more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
